Health Workforce Certificates (HWC)

Health Workforce Certificates (HWC)

The Visas for GPs Program works to direct doctors to areas where the shortage is most acute, requiring IMGs to work in communities that need more primary health care services, such as regional, rural and remote areas.

  • Doctors working in primary care need to have a Health Workforce Certificate (HWC) in order to apply for a temporary visa, or permanent residency
  • HWC are issued for non-hospital based positions in areas needing more primary health care services
  • Under the Visas for GPs Program, practices apply for a Health Workforce Certificate (HWC)
  • If a practice is in a Distribution Priority Area (DPA), then the location is eligible for the HWC
  •

*Note: there aren’t any exemptions available for HWC, in the same way that exemptions for DPA are available.
