Information for GPs about working and living in Mandurah

Mandurah is a coastal city 70km from the Perth CBD. The wider Mandurah region has a population of 110,000, making it the second-largest city in WA. The city is centered on Mandurah Estuary, and you’re never far from the pristine beaches that WA is famous for. Mandurah Region also reaches inland to Boddington, Murray, Serpentine-Jarrahdale, Pinjarra, Austin Lakes, and Waroona, giving opportunity for Tree Change, or a Sea Change.

Although Mandurah is officially a separate region from neighboring Perth, they’re often thought of together. Many people live in one and commute to the other, considering Perth’s Kwinana Freeway and the Mandurah railway line run from Mandurah to Perth Central.

You can live in inner-city property in Mandurah, or you can choose to live on the coast, on a canal, or even in a rural setting if that’s your preference.

People settling in the area report back that there are good schools on offer, including a range of government and private primary and high schools. There is a range of cultural facilities, with various churches and a mosque.

A number of existing GPs choose to commute from Perth suburbs such as Canning Vale, Cockburn Central, Coogee, Willetton, Fremantle, and Applecross.

In addition to having full patient lists, GPs tell us that they really enjoy the ability to be able to provide a broader range of medicine, compared to colleagues working in inner-city practices. Although the region is serviced by a large hospital, there is a shortage of specialists, so there’s a constant demand for General Practitioners to provide specialist skills.

Practices typically have excellent facilities and nursing support for you to utilise the specialist skills that you have, and also to develop additional GP specialties according to your interest.

In the case of GPs who have moved from full-time practice in Mandurah, and to work in practices close to Perth CBD, they generally report that they have a less interesting workload, and also that they experience a lower income.

As Mandurah is considered a DPA location, it also offers you access to a Health Workforce Certificate (HWC).

This enables practices to sponsor GP and their families for Temporary Visas, and Permanent Residency.

Due to the current significant shortage, there is currently some funding available for GPs moving to the area to assist with relocation expenses. This is agreed on a case-by-case basis.
