Darwin is famous for many things, whether that be for the box office hit movies that were filmed there over the years (Australia, Crocodile Dundee, to name a few), the rich history of the place, and the popular national parks in the area.

Fair to say, Darwin is much more than just the capital of the Northern Territory.

Population, Diversity, and Religion

Established in 1869, Darwin today is home to a population of more than 140,000 people from all corners of the world.

Apart from Australians, Darwin is the home to communities from of the UK, Philippines, Germany, Indonesia, New Zealand, and plenty more countries. In fact people from from more than 60 nationalities call Darwin home.

The History of Darwin

When it comes to history, it is fair to say that Darwin has plenty of it. In fact, the local museums, art galleries, and books, are full of stories that have helped shape Darwin to the fascinating place that it is. 

 

While officially Established in 1869, the history goes way back. The Aboriginal people of the Larrakia language are the traditional custodians and earliest known inhabitants of the area. Their name for Darwin and the area is Garramilla, meaning “white stone”, referring to the colour of rock and cliffs found in the area.

 

 

While we mentioned that Darwin is famous for many things, it was the discovery of gold that saw the city experience a massive growth in population in early 1875. Darwin fast became a gold prospecting hub and famous for the amounts of gold found there.

Things to do in Darwin

Darwin is a coastal city, well known for its harbour and for the great fishing. But that’s not all. Tourism is one of Darwin’s largest industries, with the city experiencing more than 1.38 million visitors per year. Visitors come from all over the world to visit the famous national parks (Kakadu, Litchfield, Katherine), enjoy the many festivals hosted in the city (Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival, Fringe, the NT Indigenous Music Awards, and more).

Darwin’s main concert venue is the Darwin Entertainment centre, while the local and national culture can be felt all around the city galleries and museums.

While the city offers a great culture experience, it also offers and great lifestyle for families that are able to experience the many parks and gardens in the area, sports events, horse races, and more. 

 

Residence Safety and Security

Darwin is one of the most popular tourist destination in Australia, bringing many visitors from all corners of the world. So, while like every other place in the world, incidents do occur, Darwin is a safe spot to live and work. The police body in the area are the Northern Territory Police Force who have a police station in Darwin.

Education

Over 16,000 students are enrolled in primary and secondary schools in Darwin with the city offering over 35 primary and pre-schools and 12 secondary schools, including both government and non-government.

Darwin’s largest university is the Charles Darwin University, offering both vocational and academic courses while acting as both university and institute of TAFE

The weather in Darwin

Darwin is the tropical capital of the Northern Territory. The dry season runs between May – October and wet weather between November – April

The Royal Darwin Hospital is a 360-bed public hospital that offers a large range of services in all specialty areas and a 24/7 emergency department. It also has a private hospital and Palmerston Regional Hospital – a 116-bed public hospital, also offering all services.

Yes! You certainly can. Darwin has a number of halal options, including cafes, and restaurants. Approximately 70% of all goods sold in Coles, Woolworths & IGA supermarkets are now halal certified. 

The police present in Darwin are known as The Northern Territory Police Force. Darwin is a safe place to live but as expected, like every other place in the world, the police at times do have to deal with a number of cases throughout the year.
